What to Ask When Hiring a Painter

Do they come recommended by others?

Most people are hiring by word of mouth. Speak to friends and family for recommendations.

  1. Are there any reviews or testimonials to review?

Check online.  Look for Google reviews, Facebook and Instagram posts. It will give you more insight on the painter and their company.

  1. Do they have a website?

Most professional companies have a website. It’s beneficial to see examples of their work, plus gather further information.

  1. How long have they been in business?

You need to feel confident that the painter you are hiring has a long standing reputation. You will feel assured that the painter knows what they are doing, with experience on a variety of projects.

  1. Do they carry insurance?

It’s important to ask if the painter carries liability insurance, in case they accidentally cause damage to your property.

  1. What is your timeframe?

Timing is everything. Most quality painters are booked several weeks ahead, if not months. Find out their hours to complete your job, and how long the project will take.

  1. What steps will they take before painting?

Professional painters know that prep work is the mark of quality.  Most of their time is spent protecting surroundings, surfaces, and areas, along with cleaning, dusting, filling, sanding, caulking and more. Thorough prep work will ensure that the work looks great and lasts.

  1. What will you need to do before the project begins?

The painter should inform you beforehand whether furniture or pictures need to be moved. This will save time (and money) if these steps are done before the painter begins painting.  Another factor is pets – your pets might need to be taken care of so that they don’t run through paint and accidentally track it throughout your house.

  1. What will they charge?

Cost is important, but keep in mind that you generally get what you pay for. Some painters quote without materials (such as paint); others by the day or job. Some painters will not take the time to prepare surfaces and surroundings. Agree to terms before they begin the job. A high quality painter should stand behind their work.

  1. Will they provide an estimate, outlining everything to be done?

A professional painter will provide an upfront quote or estimate for their services. Don’t take someone’s word – such as a verbal quote over the phone or in person. Get it in writing!
